Hiking in the Dolomites

We've mapped out a unique 5-day route that combines the highlights of the Dolomites with the most beautiful huts and refuges you can find. Get ready for authentic mountain villages and local culinary delights set against a backdrop of breathtaking nature.

The Dolomites are the most spectacular mountain range in Italy. You'll hike from hut to hut while admiring rugged peaks, green valleys, and enchanting azure blue lakes.

To combine these highlights in one week, we're using a shuttle twice. This is the only way we can bring together part of the Via Alpina and other highlights like Cadini di Misurina and the Tre Cime in one trip.

A unique trail from hut to hut

During this trail you’ll stay in authentic mountain huts, a cozy hotel with breakfast and two dinners included, and at a well-equipped campsite along the route. The huts and campsite are situated in idyllic locations, amidst stunning mountain scenery, surrounded by rugged rock formations and majestic peaks. Here, you'll experience the warm, welcoming atmosphere of mountain life and gain a unique insight into the local culture, from traditional dishes to stories from the mountains.

Securing a spot in these special huts is a challenge due to their popularity and limited capacity. That's why our experienced team has carefully crafted this route to make your experience as unforgettable as possible.

Why join The Dolomiti Trail?

The weekly schedule

There are countless paths in the Dolomites. Making a choice and planning a complete hiking trip isn't always easy. The total distance of just under 85 km is fixed (including the optional hike to the Tre Cime), but the distances for the daily stages may vary based on the availability of the huts.

How do I get to the first hotel?

A few weeks before departure, you'll receive the exact location of the base camp at Lago Misurina. This is close to the little hotel where you'll be spending your first night.

The easiest way to get to the first hotel is by car. However, if you plan well, it's also possible to reach this location using public transport. The number of buses to the starting point is limited, so start planning early.

We also recommend carpooling with other travelers; about 2 weeks before departure, you can join the WhatsApp group for your week.

This trail is self-guided. That means you have complete freedom to hike the route on your own. The advantage? You can walk with peace of mind because everything is taken care of for you: from accommodations to a beautiful hiking route. Our rangers on-site are on standby to help wherever needed.

On the first day, you'll receive all the briefings, explanations, and materials from our rangers. In the carefully crafted trail app, you can find the route and useful information. After that, you’ll start the hike independently. The rangers are, of course, reachable by phone to assist when needed.

Travelbase trail app

After your booking, you'll get access to the Travelbase trail app. Here you'll find all the practical info for, during, and after your trip: from tips & tricks to everything you'll need along the way. FAQs

You can always send us an email for more information about this trip; but below you’ll already find some answers to some frequently asked questions.

How are the hikes organized?

The Dolomiti Trail is a self-guided trail. This means you'll be hiking the route entirely on your own. We ensure you have everything you need to make the journey a success. Everything is taken care of for you, so you don’t have to think about anything. All you need to do is hike and enjoy.

  • Our experienced rangers will give you a comprehensive briefing on the first day.
  • Then you'll start on the achievable and balanced route we've mapped out for you, all on your own.
  • In our handy trail app, you'll find an overview of all the routes and the important info for each day. This should enable you to hike the route completely independently.
  • We've also arranged your nights in the huts or on a campsite along the trail.
  • Of course, the rangers are available to help you whenever needed. You can contact them by phone with questions throughout the entire trip.
Where will we sleep?

We provide unique sleeping arrangements. For a week, you'll be staying in charming cabins or a little hotel along the trail. One night will be spent at a campsite. We'll supply you with a tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping mat. Sanitary facilities are available at each sleeping location.

  • 1 night in a cozy little hotel (shared room) by the lake, including breakfast and dinner
  • 2 nights in cabins along the trail (dormitory), including breakfast (bring your own liner)
  • 1 night in a tent at a campsite along the trail (tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping mat included)

At the hotel at the beginning of the week, you can choose between a bed in a shared room with other participants or a private double room.

In the mountain huts, you'll sleep in dorms or mattress rooms. These are sleeping areas with several (bunk) beds or mattresses. So you'll be sleeping alongside other hikers. This is unique and typical of mountain hut life, where you can truly experience the mountains.

At the campsite, you'll stay in your own little tent.

It's mandatory to bring your own sleeping bag liner. Be sure to also bring earplugs and/or an eye mask to ensure a restful night in the hut.

When is the first hiking day?

The first hiking day at The Dolomiti Trail is the start date of your booking. For instance, if you book from September 1 to 6, you'll go on the day hike to Lago di Sorapis right on September 1.

If you want to leave well-rested, you can optionally book an extra night before the start in Misurina through us. Please note: availability is limited, and in the Travelbase app, your start date will remain September 1. However, you will see in your chosen options that an extra hotel night for the first day has been added.

What about food and water?

During the hike, you'll regularly pass by a hut where you can grab something to eat or drink. In the huts where you spend the night, breakfast is always included, and in one of the two huts, dinner is also included.

The night you stay in a tent at the campsite, you have the option to dine at the on-site restaurant or visit the campsite's food truck. There's also a small shop with basic breakfast essentials.

On the evening when dinner is not included with your stay in the hut, you can choose your dinner from the hut's menu. (Note: this is not included, so you'll need to settle the bill yourself after dinner.)

We recommend bringing enough food for during the day. Pack plenty of snacks like nuts and dried fruit to keep your energy up.

If you'd rather not have lunch in a hut every day or want to spend a bit less, you can also purchase a foodpack from us for €65. This foodpack includes a cooking set (cooking pot, gas burner, and gas bottle) and several freeze-dried meals (daily lunch plus dinner and breakfast for the campsite). Remember to bring your own lighter and reusable cutlery or a long spoon.

Also, make sure to bring your own water bottles. Aim to carry at least 2-3 liters of water. You can refill your water bottles at the huts, sometimes for a fee.

What's included in the base price?
  • Planned route and complete trip organization
  • 1 overnight stay in a small hotel (shared rooms) on the first day with breakfast and dinner
  • 2 overnight stays in huts (dormitory) along the trail with breakfast
  • 1 overnight stay in tents (tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping mat included)
  • 2 dinners included
  • Experienced English-speaking rangers on-site for support
  • Comprehensive trail app with all information about The Dolomiti Trail
  • All internal shuttles between the most beautiful spots on the trail
  • Local tourist tax
What should I bring?

You will receive a packing list well in advance that outlines all the necessary gear.

The basics are good hiking shoes that protect your ankles (category A-B/B), a backpack (about 30 – 45l), a sleeping bag liner, and protective (rain) clothing.

  • Choose shoes that you feel comfortable enough in for a long trek.
  • Prepare for changing weather patterns. Good protective rain gear is an absolute must, and don't forget a few warm clothing items. It can get chilly, especially in the evenings.
  • In the huts, it’s mandatory to bring your own sleeping bag liner. You can optionally rent a sleeping bag liner from us for €12.00 per person.

You can also optionally rent hiking poles from us for €12.00 per person. Hiking poles are highly recommended for multi-day trips in the mountains to relieve your joints and support your body.

What camping gear do I need? And can I rent it from you?

You will sleep 1 night in a tent at a campsite along the route. We provide you with a tent, a sleeping bag, and a sleeping pad (included in the price).

You will receive a packing list in advance that outlines all the necessary gear.

What's included in the foodpack?

The food pack is highly recommended if you want to keep your budget low and ensure that your meals provide all the necessary nutrients during an intense hike. You'll find tasty, varied, and nutritious meals (5 x lunch, 1 x dinner (camping), & 1 x breakfast (camping)).

Your cooking set (including a cooking pot, gas burner, and gas canister) is also included. Just bring your own lighter and reusable cutlery or a long spoon.

There is both a vegetarian and a non-vegetarian option available.

Can my dog come along on the trail?

Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in the huts where you will be staying. Combined with the intensity of the trail, this makes it impossible to bring your dog along.

Give back to nature by offsetting your CO2 emissions.

The planet offers us so much beauty to admire, but if we want to continue enjoying it in the future, we need to protect it today. That's why we make extra efforts to reduce the impact of our trips, and you can contribute reliably to a climate project by Greentripper in the booking form, which balances the CO2 emissions of your transport. By contributing to their certified project “Wildlife Cambodia,” you help protect beautiful forests and the wildlife within them, support local communities, and reduce the CO2 emissions of your transport. If you choose to contribute to offsetting your transport emissions, Travelbase will also make an additional contribution to offset the emissions on-site. After your trip, you'll receive an official carbon credit certificate.

Read more about our efforts at

How many kilometers will I cover?

During the week, you'll hike just under 75 km. The stages vary between 10 and 19 km, with one longer day of 22 km. The days are well distributed and balanced, providing a nice mix between the number of kilometers covered and the elevation gained. For those looking for an extra challenge, you can book an additional night at the end of the week and add 12 more km to admire the Tre Cime Di Lavaredo.

Where can I park my car?

You can park your car close to the hotel. The number of free parking spaces in the area is very limited. There is usually plenty of space in the paid parking lots nearby. You'll be paying around 14 euros per day to leave your car there. On the days you stay at the hotel, you can park for free in the hotel's parking lot.

What time do I need to be there on the first day?

The guides will provide all practical information and a briefing for the route on the first day at 9 AM. We recommend arriving as early as possible so that you can start the first day hike on time and beat the day tourists on the route.

You can also choose to arrive the night before and stay overnight at the hotel. You can easily add this option to your booking. Just a heads up: if the hotel is fully booked, you won't be able to add this option anymore.

Is there guidance on-site?

Yes, an experienced team of English-speaking rangers is on-site to provide support. Since this is a self-guided trail, they won't walk with you. However, they are available by phone for assistance. On the first day, you'll also receive all the briefings, explanations, and materials from our rangers.

For whom?

Anyone between the ages of 16 and 65 with good fitness and a sense of adventure can hike this trail. The Dolomites are a physically challenging area. You'll be pushing your limits. This trip includes a solid amount of physical activity, so good health is a must. Since this trail is self-guided, it's a plus if you have some hiking experience.

Are you looking to try a multi-day hike for the first time, but have doubts about your physical ability?

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • How often have I been physically active in the past three months?
  • What types of physical activity do I regularly do and for how long?
  • Have I had any recent injuries that could affect my ability to enjoy this adventure?
  • Can I comfortably hike 15 kilometers with a backpack over hilly terrain?
  • Can I train in the coming months to prepare myself optimally for this adventure?

If your answers give you full confidence to embark on this adventure, then this trail is for you! You will receive a training schedule a week after booking to get you ready to tackle the path comfortably.
